Acquisition of Italian citizenship by marriage –New regulation

As of 4 december 2018, following the approval of the new Italian Government Law, n.132 of 1 December 2018, the following amendments to the Italian Citizenship Act n. 91/1992, in particular with regard to naturalizations, have been introduced:

Duration of the administrative procedure
The deadline for the completion of the administrative procedure, from the time of application to the granting of the Italian citizenship, has been adjusted to 4 years;

Language requirements
An adequate knowledge of the Italian language has been introduced as a requirement. The minimum qualification requested is level B1, which refers to a scale of competence set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The requirement is ascertained by means of certification such as:

– A degree awarded by an Italian public educational institute or an officially recognized private institute
– A certification issued by certification authorities
The current certification authorities, members of the unified certification system CLIQ “Certification of Italian Language quality” are:
– University for foreigners of Siena
– University for foreigners of Perugia
– University of Rome Tre
– Societa’ Dante Alighieri
