Fiscal Code

The Codice Fiscale is an alphanumerical code issued by the Italian Revenue Authority to Italian citizens and also to NON-Italian citizens for tax purposes, or fulfilling a specific administrative or legal procedure in Italy.
Upon application, please provide the Consulate with the reasons why you are requesting a Codice Fiscale and any supporting document you might have. For example, if you are requesting a Codice Fiscale in order to apply for a study visa, please add your school acceptance letter. Alternatively, if you need a Codice Fiscale to rent or purchase a real estate property in Italy, evidences such as but not limited to a pre-agreement or purchase agreement might be requested.
Please consider that, due to the high demand, processing time might take up to 4 weeks.

A possible alternative way, which might be faster, is to have the Italian counterpart (for example the real estate agent if you are buying a property) to request the Codice Fiscale on your behalf at a local Office of the Agenzia delle Entrate; you might need to send them a specific Power of Attorney (Delega) for this task.
In order to apply for a Codice Fiscale via this Embassy:

  1. Fill in and sign the form available at this link;
  2. Once filled in, send it to:  attaching a copy of your passport and any evidence supporting your application.

Please, an enquiry on the status of your application should be sent not earlier than 4 weeks from the date you emailed/dropped the application.

If you want to receive the plastic card, you must apply by regular mail or drop your application at the Consular mailbox and include a pre-paid return envelope. In this case the processing time for the request is substantially longer (about 3 months). However, if you know that you will need the plastic card in the future, you must request it right away.

It should be noted that with Resolution 5/E of 14 February 2023, the Revenue Agency specified that rental contracts are registrable even where the foreign tenant not resident in Italy does not have a tax code provided that they are indicated in the contract the surname and first name, place and date of birth, as well as foreign domicile.
