Please be informed that, in light of the recent changes to citizenship legislation, former Italian citizens who lost their Italian citizenship before August 15, 1992, have been granted the option, for a limited period of time, to reacquire their Italian citizenship by submitting a declaration to the Consulate by December 31, 2027.
Who is eligible?
- Persons who lost Italian citizenship before August 15, 1992, pursuant to Articles 8-1, 8-2, and 12 of Citizenship Law 555/1912, and who were born in Italy.
- Persons who lost Italian citizenship before August 15, 1992, pursuant to Articles 8-1, 8-2, and 12 of Law 555/1912, who were born abroad and resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years before losing their Italian citizenship.
What is the procedure?
Between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027, a declaration of reacquisition of Italian citizenship must be signed at the Consular Office by submitting the following documentation:
- Naturalization decree or certificate of Israeli citizenship (or any certificate of acquisition of a foreign citizenship)
- If born in Italy, a full copy of the birth certificate noted with the loss of Italian citizenship, to be requested from the Italian municipality of birth;
- If born abroad, a full copy of the birth certificate transcript noted with the loss of Italian citizenship, to be requested from the Italian municipality where the certificate was registered;
- If born abroad, a historical registry certificate/historical residence certificate issued by the municipality(s) of residence in Italy, certifying residence in Italy for at least two consecutive years prior to the loss of the Italian citizenship;
Former citizens availing themselves of this option will not have to establish residency in Italy.
