Italian electronic ID card (CIE)

Italian electronic ID cards (CIE) can be issued only to Italian citizens whose AIRE (Register of Italians living abroad) registration is complete and duly processed by Italian local Authorities. In order to apply at the Embassy of Italy in Israel you need to be resident in the applicable jurisdiction of this Embassy.

  1. Validity

The validity, like passports, varies according to the holder’s age:

  • 3 years for infants 3 y.o. or younger;
  • 5 years for minors from 3 to 18 years of age;
  • 10 years for adults.
  1. Application

The application for CIE has to be submitted using PRENOTAMI at the following link. The appointment shall be scheduled NOT EARLIER THAN 15 days from the date of the application in order to allow the Consulate to make sure your file is up-to-date and correct any old data. When booking your appointment, we kindly ask you to upload a copy of your document (in the field “document”) and the application form (in the field “Other”). Please upload PDF files, 2MB max and readable.

Please note that being registered with A.I.R.E. is mandatory. Also, in case you were born abroad, it is also required that your birth certificate be registered with the Civil Status Registry of the Municipality of reference, as the registration details will be printed on your CIE.

  1. Appointment and documents to be submitted

The day of your appointment you should have with you the following documents:

  • 1 passport photo of the same type as those used for passports;
  • A valid ID. If the applicant has no identity document, he / she shall be accompanied by two witnesses;
  • if the applicant is under the age of 18: an affidavit from both parents

During your appointment, as we do for passports, we will capture applicant’s photo and, except for minors under 12 years of age, fingerprints, and signature. This biometric info will be safely stored inside the CIE microchip and not kept on file here at the Consulate.

  1. Cost

The consular fees are:

  • 21.95 euros, in case of first issuance or renewal;
  • 27.11 euros, in case of a duplicate due to theft or loss.

Payments will be collected in cash in ILS the day of your appointment.

  1. Delivery

ID Cards will be printed by Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato and mailed to the address provided on your application after about 20 days.

Should the card be mailed to a wrong or incorrect address, the package will be held at the local post office for a second attempt before being returned to our Consular Office. In this case, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment to pick it up.
